8473474606 batesh@carleton.edu haileytorresbates@gmail.com 2032507 After finishing up my first year at Carleton I was inspired to broaden my knowledge and do something out of my comfort zone this summer. I am a humanities student but the sciences have always interested me but weren't super accessible as a black/Latina cis woman. I felt like I had missed out on STEM subjects and found the MNDrive Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation as a great opportunity to not only learn something but also get out of my humanities bubble. I got to work with a Biomedical Engineering professor who took me to work with patients who had depression, epilepsy, and other chronic pain disorders. I learned how deep brain stimulation (DBS) and vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) are used to treat these disorders. I am glad I was able to learn something and see something I wouldn't otherwise have ever seen considering my prospective career paths and majors. Overall a wonderful experience. H.J.B. H.J.B.

586-636-1370 baconm2@carleton.edu martagable4321@gmail.com 2024628 MnDrive Internship June 6th- July 29th university of minnesota MnDrive This summer I worked in the TRiCam laboratory with Dr. Angus MacDonald III. My research looked at the flanker task as a form of cognitive remediation. I first learned how to conduct a literature review. I read about what cognitive remediation was on PubMed as well as looked at papers written about the specific kinds of cognitive remediation being used in the TRiCAM laboratory and the studies being investigated Through reading this research I discovered what brain areas are active in working memory and selective attention as well as the concept of proximal transfer. Not only that, but I gained an understanding of the work that was being done in the laboratory and moved on to understand my role with this work.

After this I moved onto figuring out how researchers interrogate the data they collect. This means what kinds of questions are they hoping to answer from the data they collected. I discovered how they decide what to analyze and how they narrow down their research question. I was then given the opportunity to choose which of the brain tasks I would study and how I would interrogate the data from that task. I learned what aspects of the task would be important to interrogate for the research being done.

During the time I was learning what to interrogate from the data I also learned about how to interrogate the data. I learned about new software such as R studios. Before this internship I had never taken a statistics course. This made it hard to organize data and make a graph that was understandable for my research poster. I figured out how to make a more complex staggered graph on Excel and how to use Excel to create new forms of graphs I had not made before. I also learned how to write a research paper and make a research poster presenting the work I had done.

Through this internship I also learned how to work with human participants by running trials and eventually leading the trials by myself. I discovered I like this kind of work and find it rewarding to discover new things by fitting the puzzle pieces together at the end of the research. I also discovered that looking at specific parts of the brain and trying to understand the role it plays in things like cognitive function and metacognition is something that I am interested in.

Other things I learned throughout my time at the University of Minnesota is how teams build a connection with each other such as having a weekly lunch together, going on day adventures such as canoeing or seeing a movie and that this builds better work relationships and makes it easier to ask for help when you are not sure what to do in your research process. I enjoyed getting to know the people in my laboratory and working alongside them to make our research work as effective as possible.
