I had the pleasure to attend the Louis Stokes- PAC Models, 2023 Diversity in Stem Conference held in New Orleans over a three-day period in late July. Over a three-day period, I was emersed in speeches and presentations from “STEMfluencer”, undergrads and professors, scientists, and researchers. The many messages deliver throughout this conferences will have lasting impact on my development as a student and future teacher. Keynote speaker, Dr. Erika Henderson, Ed. D. delivered a powerful message on the challenges underrepresented minorities experience in the STEM fields and the importance of “Harnessing GRIT” that will be an integral for success in a future STEM career. Another Keynote speaker Edwin W. Lee !!, Ph. D. delivered a powerful speech titled “Broadening the Doorway to STEM and Keeping it Open”. His message of meeting the student where they are resonated with my hopes in my future classrooms. There were many other speeches and breakout session on imposter syndrome, fellowship opportunities, career development, mental health, and resilience the list goes on. My favorite event of the conference was the Undergrad Researcher Poster Presentations. There were over fifty presentations from undergrad students. Of the fifty I had a understand of almost none of the topics it was amazing. Although the M was used in every presentation the STE dominated the poster session. Two things that I did take from this was the importance of familiarizing myself with the different fields so that I can better enlighten my future students. I also was impressed with the intersection of social economics and science in many of their presentation specifically one titled “The Impact of Public Housing Status on the Human Gut Microbiome”. This event has reinforced my plans to becoming a educator.

To be able to be involved in this project was very energizing for me. I gained a great deal in terms of acquiring a new skill to understand better and comprehend clearer the DATA aspect of science research. I was truly fortunate and absorb much.

The speakers and presenters were extremely helpful in there discussion(s). Being shown that there are other avenues of use and availability in the sciences, was eye-opening as well.

Lastly, and most important was the constant access we have to Dr. Renu Kumar, a talented and knowledgeable instructor. Along with , Tai Do. Both made themselves very accessible and I found consistently provided the correct answers to question and/or provided the appropriate resource to gather the information independently.

It was a wonderful experience for me. I am a much better student for it.

Thank You.

7633277018 th7291ix@go.minnstate.edu hunji0626@naver.com 5823401 This 2022 Epidemiological Summer Research was my first participation in the study. So, I didn't know anything about research, and I just joined this study intending to be able to explore science and experience research. However, from the beginning of my study, lots of things were challenging for me. The biggest obstacle was discussion and communication in English because it's not been a long time since I lived in the United States. Therefore, I had to learn and communicate a lot from the beginning, so of course, more effort was needed, and more failures were made. For me, who participated in research just out of curiosity, designing research was also a big problem. I didn’t know what to do, how to design research, and what to look for. Nevertheless, the professor in charge of the cohort to which I belong, Dr. Kumar listened to every opinion, and sometimes suggested things to do. Also, she understood my language barrier and answered questions to overcome them so well that I was able to proceed with my research. Dr. Kumar was a good mentor. And weekly speaker's presentations and virtual field trips gave me basic research knowledge, and I was able to hear about how they conducted research through their experiences. By listening to their experiences, I was able to grasp the concept of the research, get ideas, and get help on how to design the research. This epidemiological research was able to get an outline of the research thanks to a very good mentor and a good program to inform about research. It was an indirect research experience through zoom, but I think I was able to take a step forward in research with a lot of help. In my opinion, this program is a program that can give directions to students who do not have a certain outline of research and helps them grow through a lot of help. It was a really good experience. Thank you. J.H.S Jihun Shin, 07/03/2022

2183930967 ty6259xx@go.minnstate.edu sigwansky@gmail.com 00316410 I attended a zoom meeting that consisted of women in science panel and a guest speaker. It was an amazing event to attend especially as a Native female student that despite working hard in college there's not always a lot of other like minded women around who are into science and math. These ladies did a great job of speaking to that and about finding a group of people in college and holding on to them. The guest speaker also spoke about how her mental health had affected her journey which resonated with me as well. I have a lot of struggles with mental health and I also think it's important to reach out and make sure that there are accommodations. Showing up to college and continuing education is just the tip of the iceberg. Especially if there's outside factors such as being female, being a "minority", family issues and stability. Then to head into a field of study that is looked at as predominantly male can also be challenging. Another lady spoke to that in her computer programming class where she had a male partner who wasn't very pleasant.
Honestly, I got really lucky with a family of females that pushed me to do whatever I wanted. My mother and my aunty both got auto mechanic degrees at Dunwoody. My mother went on to start a biochemistry degree at University of Morris but had to drop out due to being pregnant with her second child. My aunty went to MCTC and worked in IT for quite a few years. These are strong female role models that had to face a huge amount of sexism in school and later in workplaces that were dominantly male co-workers. I feel that as more and more women choose to take up spaces that hopefully these issues will fade away. I loved to watch the women on the zoom meeting light up as they talked about what they are passionate about and the work that they are doing in the community. We need everybody we can working toward solutions for a better world.

6124059942 yz8259kc@go.minnstate.edu SkipwithE@outlook.com 13860042 Virtual Transfer Admissions Event 05/05/22 Virtual University of Minnesota Transfer Program Reflection:
Recently, I attended the Virtual Transfer and Admissions Event, hosted by UMN Transfer Admissions Counselors Greta Simons and Mary Carginello. During the event we discussed what transferring entails, ways to improve my student resume and whom to talk to in regard to the journey towards my major. Amidst this discussion, they also answered questions I had that enlightened my perspective on the direction I was heading academically. Furthermore, the counselors illuminated prospects such as requirements for health majors, specifically in medicine, and explained that my current journey was great for the direction I was headed. As a first-generation college student, I’ve struggled with finding the right sources to improve my student resume. This event was one of the first that truly shed light on where to begin looking and even where to look if I had more concerns. I learned so much from the event. For example, I was able to obtain the right contacts and learn about what to implement educationally. I learned that extracurriculars varied, depending on major and academic goals, and that I would be able to find even more resources as I succeed through my transfer process. What I most liked about the event was that substantial amount of intersectionality and sense of community it provided. I was glad to have the support from the transfer team and the North Star family. Furthermore, I’d say this event is great for undergraduates, such as myself, who are looking to extend themselves to the science community in hopes of preparing for a bright future. I would also tell future members of the North Star Community to actively ask questions during events, especially like the one I attended, to encourage prospects and opportunities that may arise. Not only did I feel that this session opened doors for me, but taught me that I shouldn’t be afraid to be persistent in events. It taught me that I have a greater community now and ahead of my academic journey ready to work with me and provide a sense of academic collectivism. I’m grateful to have had the chance to join the event and learn from such amazing people. I look forward to more opportunity’s within North Star STEM Alliance.

9529320887 ethiopia.kebede@go.minneapolis.edu ethiomagnetive@gmail.com 15495258 This event was aimed to inspire women by inviting four women who have successful stem careers. The women spoke about their struggles in balancing life and education. The first speaker learned engineering with so much passion. In addition to taking honors classes, she also participated in athletics and other activities. It eventually became too hard to keep up. Thus, she began saying no to some activities to focus on her most important tasks.

Then the other speakers shared different methods to use time in college wisely without being overwhelmed. They suggested identifying the most critical tasks using a planner and trying to find a society on campus that understands and inspires us. They insisted that it would help us get involved in college without adding pressure.

Then the panelists were asked different questions about mentorships and clubs on campus. They noted that men lead computer science and other stem clubs. It may even cause you to experience imposter syndrome. However, joining the clubs in groups or looking for a female tutor may ease the situation. Thus, the most important lesson that I have learned is to find a society to get involved and prioritize academic studies.

9529320887 ethiopia.kebede@go.minneapolis.edu ethiomagnetive@gmail.com 15495258 In this event, we toured several rooms that MCTC (Minneapolis Community and Technical College) rents for research purposes. The most interesting part was seeing what the researchers want in a laboratory and what they would do with each machine.

The tour began in a biology lab. The lab provides services for detergent manufacturers by determining the effectiveness of detergent formulas. The institution provides internship opportunities for students majoring in stem fields. The students use different machines to see how long it takes for a detergent to kill a certain strain of germ.

We met another set of ambitious student interns in a bigger laboratory that is exploring possible genetic data storage. This lab uses stronger sterilization methods since DNA tends to get everywhere.

We also saw other more complex labs that handle several types of research. They gave us some insight into the use of temperature controllers and autoclaves. Then they mentioned that they give students internship opportunities.

The building also provides rooms for other researchers to do research in the same room. These researchers open opportunities for interactions between students and teachers. Overall, I have seen how scientists work behind the products we see every day.

9529320887 ethiopia.kebede@go.minneapolis.edu ethiomagnetive@gmail.com 15495258 The event was meant to provide us with some insight into stem careers. The presenter did an excellent job of explaining the wide range of possibilities for stem students for students of multiple skills. He began his presentation by introducing himself. He said that he learned health science and economics with an emphasis on health sciences. At the time he was working on clinical data and data obtained from various medical research.

He went on to share the skills needed for a job in health services. The most important ones were being familiar with a programming language, knowing the basics of cell biology, and understanding statistics. He asked us to answer some basic questions so that we could see how much of each skill is needed.

He then concluded his presentation by telling us steps we can take as students. He suggested learning R, the most used programming language in medical research, reading journals and connecting with researchers on social media, taking a statistics course, and using a to-do list to make sure that we are making the most of the opportunities we get.

I learned so much from this meeting. I have started reading journals and learning R. Moreover, I left with a sense of knowing the next steps to take for a successful stem career.

Tuesday, April 5, 2022, 12 PM-12:30 PM.

The main aim of the online seminar was to educate about 3D cell culture. I did not know anything about the topic. By the end of the online seminar, I knew a lot about the importance of 3D culture and techniques used in research.

The speaker started by differentiating 2d models and 3d models. She said that 2d models are easy to grow and maintain. They are also used to model diseases and produce drugs. However, 3D cultures make more physiologically important models.

They also noted the effectiveness of a 3D model depends on the selected cell line. In some cases, this might mean developing the wanted cell parts from stem cells by facilitating the environment in which the cell is cultured. I found the precision exciting even though it sounds like a lot of work.

She also mentioned organoids and spheroids in addition to some modern instruments used to produce cultures in laboratories. Moreover, she highlighted the application of 3d cell cultures in cancer and regenerative medicine research as well as producing other drugs.

Overall, I learned many new things about research in a laboratory setting. I also felt hope in the growth of science and research techniques.

Date Tuesday, February 22, 2022, from 12:00 PM to 2:30 PM

The main aim of the event was to inspire attendees by showing African American students who have undergraduate degrees and more. The presenters started with presenting the Universities’ practices that help African American students succeed in STEM fields. As a HBCU (Historical Black Colleges and Universities), Dillard University offers different stem-based programs for children as well as college students.

The leader of one of these programs (Dr. Ruby Broadway) started the panel discussion. She introduced herself and spoke about her experience in biological research. As she was speaking, I could hear perseverance in her voice. I was also inspired by her research initiative.

The next presenters were Dr. Eric Buckles from the college of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. Abdalla Darwish from the physics department. Both have done extensive research in STEM fields. Dr. Abdall Darwish also spoke passionately about research that he has done with his graduate students. He also mentioned that 55% percent of them graduated.

The panel discussion ended after the presenters answered questions about the supportive programs. The moderator also offered a means of contact to ask for more information. Overall, I left the online seminar inspired after seeing the success of many African Americans in STEM. I also learned that initiative and perseverance are valuable research skills.

There was a keynote speaker followed by a panel discussion from undergraduate women in STEM. The keynote speaker Emily Anne Vargas is a PhD student in Materials Science and Engineering. Her story was comforting to hear as quite a few of her struggles were also mine in my academic career and in life. She spoke about burnout and the effect it can have on your body and mind. I haven’t experience it in my academic career, but I have in my professional career before starting college. She also spoke about dealing with nerve damage and having to go to physical therapy. I am also going through a similar situation and go to PT regularly. One of her main points was a sense of community once she joined SHPE. Once I get to the University of Minnesota, I would like to get more involved with Native Americans in STEM groups. I am currently part of AISES, but haven’t quite connected on there, but I recently apply for scholarships through them, so I hope to become more involved. SW Stefan Wamego 5/20/2022

Staci works for NASA Goddard public outreach program and received a B.S. in astrophysics from the University of Minnesota and a M.S. in astronomy from the University of Iowa. Her presentation highlighted past, present, and future space missions from NASA. There was a map she used of our solar system that illustrated where each mission is and would be. There are two missions that will venture back to Venus to learn about its surface and how it may have formed. We saw selfies and pictures of drill holes from the Curiosity Rover on Mars. She showed us a picture of Jupiter’s south pole where 8 cyclones have all come together in a circle. My personal favorite part was when she discussed the mission that will take is back to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. The mission is called Dragonfly and it will land a drone type vehicle on Titan capable of flight. Because of the low gravity and thick atmosphere, they expect to do this with ease. Unfortunately that won’t be till 2034, but I am excited to see the oceans and lakes they encounter. SW Stefan Wamego 5/20/2022

The event had two guest speakers to talk about the research they’ve done and how they got there. The first speaker was Matt Metzler who is an undergrad at UMD and working on a B.S. in Geological Sciences. He is currently working on extraterrestrial mapping of Venus. One of the most interesting points for me was when he discussed the possibility of microbial life on Venus. The second presenter was Sanath Aithala who is working on a PhD in geology and the geology of Mars. His presentation concentrated on the past geology of Mars, discussing how Martian rocks get to Earth, lack of Martian plate tectonics and how Mars formed as a planet. I found it incredibly interesting to hear that Mars has one of the oldest surfaces since after accretion it was never bombarding like the rest of the planets. He even discussed the meteorite that was big in the headlines long ago, that raised the question is there life on Mars. I loved this whole presentation as I never thought that geologist could get jobs working on space related projects. I plan to use this information to help future generations decide what they want to do as I never thought about geologists that way. SW Stefan Wamego 5/20/2022

The event had three speakers each with their own presentation as Solar System Ambassadors. Christopher Mick was the first speaker, and his topic was the mars rover Perseverance and the helicopter Ingenuity. He showed some pictures to put the rover into scale and I didn’t know that it was that big. He also showed a picture illustrating how the sky crane lowers the rover. I don’t know how I thought they landed the rover, but it wasn’t with a sky crane, so that was very interesting to learn. The second speaker was Dee McLellan, and she went through an activity to simulate how the sky crane dropped the rover. I found the activity to be quite intriguing and plan to show my partner so she can use the same activity for the children she nannies. The third speaker was Nadia Abuisnaineh and she talked about the Artemis missions and what they are. I attended a previous event last semester and have already been filled in on a lot of the info she had, but she talked about something new, The Gateway. I haven’t heard about that yet and loved the information she presented on it. I can’t wait to hear more about these mission to the moon and the information we discover. SW Stefan Wamego 5/20/2022

It was the first event of a series of events and was held on zoom. Prior to the event I knew that indigenous people would be a topic, but to my surprise it was most of the event. There were three speakers, Dr. Annette S. Lee, Carl Gawboy, and Ramona Kitto Stately from the Native Skywatchers to give short presentations on how the constellations relate to their cultures.
Overall, I loved the entire event, but what was most inspiring to me was to see a Lakota woman who was an astrophysicist, Dr. Annette S. Lee. I am Lakota and I haven’t met very many others who are involved with STEM. So, to see someone with a doctorate in astrophysics and art was a great feeling of inclusion. It makes me excited to get further into my studies and career so I can see who I will meet. Her presentation on the Lakota star maps was my first introduction to them. I feel like I can barely remember learning about them when I was very young on the reservation. I moved away when I was in third grade, so a lot of my culture has been forgotten. It was both amazing to learn and sad to remember that I don’t know much about my own culture. I recently decided I want to help and inspire other indigenous students so I am in the process of getting a background check so I can help tutor at the St. Paul American Indian Family Center.
There is a saying that Ramona brought up at the end of the event that has stuck with me since. It’s “We are the star people” and it applies to both Lakota and Dakota. It’s more referring to our place in the Universe and how we view what happens when you die, but it’s taken on a new meaning for me. I have always been interested in space since I moved away from the reservation and now, I feel like I should use my education for something space related. Maybe I can be someone who helps the Star people return to the stars.
