It provided a platform to share my research findings and engage in valuable networking opportunities. While I have previously participated in poster presentations related to my research, this conference stood out due to its diverse range of research topics presented in various formats by individuals from diverse backgrounds. This provided me with the opportunity to share my research with those who might not have the same research background and learn from those whose research I had no prior knowledge of

The conference served as a catalyst for personal and academic growth, offering a conducive environment for networking. I had the privilege of establishing connections with students from other colleges across the United States. Additionally, I engaged in insightful conversations with representatives from graduate schools, gaining valuable insights into their programs. As someone considering further education beyond my undergraduate studies, this conference was instrumental in broadening my understanding of the diverse array of schools and programs available as well as establishing meaningful connections with these institutions.

This has been hard for me especially in chemistry. I feel like If I was given an extra week or a couple of days, I’d probably be able to understand the topics well. Another thing I struggle with is finding resources or programs to apply to. I’m scared that I’ll run out of time to do that and wouldn’t have the greatest outcome in undergraduate. I believe that North Star STEM Alliance would address my needs with the various networking events that are hosted and also connect me with other students in the program to create friendships leading into study groups. Honestly though I’d appreciate any program or service there is.
I would work toward increasing engagement of multicultural students in STEM programs by always befriending them because I know that we’d have the same or similar experiences. I think study groups would be a great way and just sharing other resources to them, so we can all succeed. MK Manasuma Kamara 4/23/24 Manasuma Kamara 4/23/24

One significant hurdle has been navigating the academic landscape without the guidance of family members who have previously experienced higher education. As the oldest in my family, I lacked a support system to turn to for advice and assistance when transitioning to college. This sense of isolation left me feeling lost and unsure of which path to pursue. One of the biggest challenges I faced was deciding on a major that aligned with my goals and aspirations. However, despite the uncertainty, I always had a passion for healthcare and knew deep down that I wanted to pursue a profession as a physician assistant. As a first-generation student, I was unaware of the specific criteria and qualifications needed to stand out as an applicant. The North Star STEM Alliance could address my needs by offering a range of programs and services that support my journey toward becoming a physician assistant. Specifically, I believe their focus on social networking, undergraduate research, leadership opportunities, peer mentoring, and graduate school preparation would be incredibly beneficial.
In terms of undergraduate research, the Alliance could provide opportunities for hands-on research experience, which can be challenging to find in large universities like the University of Minnesota. Access to research opportunities would not only enhance my academic experience but also make me a more competitive applicant for physician assistant programs.
As an Ethiopian first-generation student, I am committed to increasing the engagement of multicultural students in STEM disciplines through various avenues. One way I contribute is by serving as a youth leader at my Ethiopian church in Saint Paul. In this role, I guide young members of the community, many of whom aspire to become physicians, by sharing insights and advice based on my own experiences. I emphasize the importance of their undergraduate years, encouraging them to take advantage of every opportunity that comes their way while also highlighting common mistakes to avoid. By being actively involved in my community and sharing knowledge and guidance, I hope to inspire and support multicultural students in pursuing STEM disciplines and achieving their academic and career goals. This has presented a multitude of challenges but I have learned how to manage my time and how important it is to prioritize tasks effectively. Being a first-generation student also adds another layer of challenges. I often find myself facing unfamiliar challenges alone because my family isn't the most familiar with this process. This has added a level of stress where I often feel like I'm not receiving the support I should be receiving. Although these obstacles are present, I feel more determined than ever to achieve my goals. I am committed to reaching my goals and positively impacting other's lives. North Star STEM Alliance will help address my needs by providing me with opportunities that are hard to find. I am very interested in getting started in research and I have yet to find a research opportunity that would fit me. The North Star STEM Alliance not only has their own research programs, but it highlights programs at my school that are sometimes difficult to find. I have learned how complicated the research process is and with the help of NSSA, I can find something that fits me well. I also love the aspect that NSSA holds conferences and symposium opportunities for the research that is done. This not only serves as way to present the research you have worked so hard on, but it also serves as a networking opportunity. You can meet many other talented students as well as mentors that are interested in your work. This is something that I truly admire about the program and would love that opportunity for myself. There are many ways that I will work towards increasing the engagement of multicultural students in STEM disciplines and one approach is by providing a space where people can view at me as a role model. Representation is important in all aspects of education but especially in the STEM field. I will work towards providing resources and access to individuals who are just like me and wanted to get involved in a resourceful program like this. I will also work towards inspiring others to achieve their goals no matter how big or small. Sabrina Sabrie Sabrina Sabrie, 4/17/2024 Sabrina Sabrie, 4/17/2024

Especically for the engineering field as there is less representation of black students -- I experience quite a lot of self doubts and imposture sydromes that hinder me from performing at my fullest potential, and it has been incredibly difficult opening up about that and getting myself the help that I need to overcome these personal limiations and barriers. I think this program best addresses my needs, since it is specifically designed for students of color pursuing STEM. Services that would best support my challenges are receiving mentoring and coaching especially, because it'd be helpfull to follow up with someone regarding my struggles and get feedback with solutions on overcoming them and toolkits for success in STEM regarding excelling in heavy courses, gaining technical skills, learning to time manage/balance, and advocating for yourself and voicing your needs. Additionally personal/professional development is something I am very interested in order to refine my skills regarding looking for internships, networking, etc. Personally in the future I would love to work in advocacy and with programs like this one, to promote recruitment on campuses and early recruitment for kids in middle/high school to get them interested in STEM that are underepresented so they are equiped with what they need before embarking their college journeys. 6124073543 animu001@umn.edu animu001@umn.edu 5601242 May 2025 College of Liberal Arts Life or Biological Sciences, Other/Not Listed I am a Human Physiology student with a pre-med track and minors in Public Health and Integrative Neuroscience. 3.0 Yes No Full-time Not Hispanic nor Latino Black or African American Permanent Resident Yes Yes Social Networking, Undergraduate Research, Leadership Opportunities, Peer Mentoring, Graduate School Preparation, Professional Development Navigating my undergraduate journey has been a mosaic of challenges, from personal to financial. As an immigrant, the transition to a new country brought its own set of hurdles. Adapting to a new culture and educational system, overcoming language barriers, and establishing a support network have required perseverance and resilience. Financially, as a low-income first generation student, funding my education has been a constant concern. I've been fortunate to receive scholarships that have eased this burden, but it's been a continuous effort to balance work, studies, and extracurriculars to make ends meet.

Adding to these challenges are personal family situations that have impacted my college experience. Throughout my time in college, my family has been going through a separation process, placing extra responsibilities and emotional stress on me. The loss of loved ones, including my uncle, who was a best friend to me, my grandfather during my sophomore year, and a cousin to suicide, have been deeply impactful and emotionally taxing. These losses have added layers of grief and complexity to my academic journey. Additionally, as a Black woman, I've faced unique challenges in academia and social settings. Finding peers who share similar experiences and can offer support has been invaluable, but not always easy. Despite these challenges, I've worked diligently in my classes, formed study groups, and sought out mentors to help navigate these obstacles, hoping that my journey can pave a smoother path for other immigrants and people of color in the future.
The research opportunities offered by the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance (LS-NSSA) are particularly appealing to me. As someone aspiring to become an MD, I see research as a vital component of medical practice, enabling a deeper understanding of medical issues and fostering innovative approaches to patient care. Engaging in research through LS-NSSA would provide hands-on experience, allowing me to contribute to scientific advancements while honing my analytical and problem-solving skills.

Additionally, LS-NSSA's networking opportunities would allow me to connect with like-minded peers and professionals, enriching my understanding of the medical field and potentially opening doors to future opportunities.

In summary, LS-NSSA's emphasis on research, mentorship, and networking will be instrumental in helping me achieve my primary goal of becoming an MD.
Attending my choice of Medical School would allow me to use my personal background and experience to contribute to the diverse community by breaking stereotypes and creating ways to express my own culture as well as learn from other scholars. I know and understand the importance of building a community. My background and personal experience contribute to this diverse community by helping scholars fit in, feel represented, and feel like they belong here no matter who they are.

In my journey as an immigrant and first-generation student, I've encountered firsthand the challenges of navigating the educational landscape in a new country. This experience has fueled my passion for increasing the engagement of multicultural students in STEM disciplines. I believe that representation matters and that students from diverse backgrounds bring unique perspectives that enrich the STEM community.

One way I plan to work towards this goal is by actively participating in mentorship programs. Drawing from my experiences, I aim to serve as a mentor for multicultural students, providing guidance, support, and encouragement. By sharing my journey and showcasing how I've navigated challenges, I hope to inspire and empower other students to pursue their interests in STEM.

Additionally, I will advocate for the creation and support of inclusive spaces within STEM programs and organizations. By collaborating with faculty, staff, and fellow students, I will work to develop initiatives that celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and create opportunities for multicultural students to thrive in STEM. This could include organizing events, workshops, and networking opportunities that highlight the contributions of multicultural individuals in STEM fields and provide platforms for students to connect, learn, and grow together.

Lastly, I will leverage my connections and involvement in community organizations to bridge the gap between academic institutions and the broader community. By partnering with local organizations, schools, and non-profits, I aim to create outreach programs that introduce STEM concepts to multicultural students at an early age, sparking interest and laying the groundwork for future engagement in STEM disciplines. Additionally, I am eager to join pre-med organizations and boards this upcoming year to further contribute to the academic community. By actively participating in these clubs, I will work to foster a supportive environment for multicultural students interested in pursuing careers in medicine and STEM-related fields. Through mentorship, networking events, and educational workshops, I hope to inspire and guide students on their path towards achieving their academic and professional goals in STEM. Through these efforts, I hope to contribute to building a more diverse and inclusive STEM community where all students, regardless of their background, feel welcomed, supported, and empowered to pursue their passions and make meaningful contributions to the field.

I liked how diverse and well planned the conference was. The environment was also extremely welcoming and many of the speakers encouraged students to get out of their comfort zone to network and gain things from the conference even if it meant making mistakes while doing so because a learning environment was consistently promoted. There was nothing I particularly disliked about the conference.

- Do you feel the conference contributed to your professional development? Why or why not?
I do feel like the conference contributed to my professional development because hearing professors and scientific leaders discuss their own professions gave me insight to possible paths I can pursue for my own academic and professional career in the future.

- What sessions did you attend? Did you visit exhibitors?
I attended the "Future-proofing Your Carrer: Preparing Gen Z for STEM Oppertunities", "InnovateAI: Nurturing Disruptive technology through AI and Research" and the "from PhD to life: Navigating a Carrer in Academia" sessions. I did also visit the exhibitors.

- What did you learn by attending the conference?

I learned about various graduate school and internship opportunities I can pursue, and also about the difficulties I might face being a minority in STEM, but how to persevere and grow despite them.

In this conference I had such a great time being able to meet people from different places, and being able to learn about the many opportunities available after completing my bachelors degree. Maybe the one thing that was not as useful for me was how there were few opportunities presented about people that may be interested in obtaining a career after getting an undergraduate degree.

- Do you feel the conference contributed to your professional development? Why or why not?
I think in some ways it definitely did, and some it did not. I think it definitely helped be understand that not only are there opportunities to go to graduate school, but certain programs and government opportunities are available to help support the growth in education in research that is possible for me. I think in other ways it was not as helpful, especially because at the time the conference was held, many of the deadlines for the opportunities already passed, meaning that I'd have to wait until the summer or fall to apply for these things.

- What sessions did you attend? Did you visit exhibitors?
I visited the poster sessions and the exhibits. I think the part I remember the most was those graduate school and government exhibit presentations of what they all were because it really enlightened me to what there really is the opportunity to do.

- What did you learn by attending the conference?
I think that from my time at the conference, I learned that it is important to make a plan for what you want to do, and to set your head right at completing it. I think this was something I was not very sure about how it could be done, but after the conference I had much better confidence in being able ot do something like this.

(323) 360 1070 jimenezl@carleton.edu layevskajimenezhdz@gmail.com 2018863 The opportunity to attend the Emerging Researchers National (ERN) Conference proved to be incredibly insightful and a great experience as the first conference I attended. Especially at a time when I’m preparing to be best informed about graduate and post-baccalaureate programs focused on cognitive neuroscience, the conference offered a substantial opportunity to explore a wide variety of information on them.
I felt I had an improved understanding of academic and professional tracks each day I spent at the conference. My favorite part was attending the exhibits, where I spoke to a number of people about the programs offered at different institutions. In particular, asking for what research and graduate programs centered on my intended field of study allowed me to build awareness of which institutions I want to consider applying to following my undergraduate career. As a Student Career Assistant at my institution’s career center, I feel especially benefited from attending this conference. I was able to directly apply my knowledge of networking, explore graduate tracks, MD-PhD programs, and engage in discussions with other researchers. Notably, I learned about an upcoming post-bacc program in computational science that I can apply to cognitive science that opens next fall, which I intend to apply to. Holding an in-person conversation about the program allowed me to directly ask questions and solidify my decision to pursue this opportunity.
I also intend to present my research at an academic/research conference next year. At the conference, listening to students’ presentations of their research gave me an idea of how to best present research and share it to an audience. I was able to observe various presentation styles, poster designs, and how presenters tailored their presentations for an audience familiar with research practices, but unfamiliar with specific areas. I had a fun time learning about many research projects, but especially in those related to neuroscience or psychology. I plan to use the experience to prepare to present my own research, tailor it for different audiences, and to have learned about the wide variety of research being conducted in this field.
The organization of the conference was efficient and made going through their agenda smoothly. Their use of the Whova app was convenient, easy to understand, and efficient in planning out which workshops and sessions I attend. Throughout the conference, I attended each exhibits session, Critical Elements of the PhD and MD/PhD Application Process - Strong Application Essays (s) and Impressive Interviews(s), Mentoring 101: Finding Your Mentors and Becoming a Great Mentee, Premier Fellowships, Internships/Scholarships/Fellowships 2, and Pathways to Premed: Designing Your Medical School Journey, and most poster sessions. Each session and workshop was highly informative and the best part was hearing directly from speakers who held genuine interest and support for conference attendees.
The conference did move at a fast pace, with the sessions I wanted to attend most, being back to back. It was unfortunate to have to choose between one session or another when they overlapped, but all sessions were great and each had valuable information. The early start time could be a little overwhelming, but the ease of getting to the conference location made that easier to work through.
Overall, the conference was a great first conference attendance experience. I’m excited to learn more about the programs that interest me most and contact program persons-of-contact for more information as I begin applying to the many I learned about during this conference.

I have to adapt to every different class and develop a study habit that helps me understand the material. Understanding that different classes have to be approached by different studying methods took a while to understand, but once I was able to, I allowed myself to be more open-minded and flexible. Although I still struggle sometimes to figure out the best studying habits for me, I understand that learning styles in college are an ongoing process that requires patience and resilience. By managing my time properly and being open to new learning methods, I am able to understand the material to the best of my own abilities. The LS-NSSA scholars program provides various opportunites to learn about the different feilds of STEM and some of the few inicitives that interested me were the opportunitty to attend conferences all around while being compensated. As someone who had to drop the opportunity of attending conferences due to not having enough scholarship money this is something I would really benefit of off. Another opportunty is connecting with professionals trhough different learning opportunities such as IntTERACCT or the Summer Reaserch Internship. Lastly, I also like how connected they are to the University which allows for students to have access and learn about the different opportunities available to them within close proximity. As an immigrant from India, I can speak in a variety of languages, which helps me build conversations with people from various different backgrounds. I believe that one social identity that I hold is the languages I can speak, and this identity helps me express myself to all different people and also be able to learn, connect and create an inclusive environment with other multicultural students within STEM disciplines.

From being in attendance to class every day, working enough to pay my rent, applying for internships, co-op's, and scholarships, creating events for my student groups, completing assignments, studying every day, to making sure I see family and friends, all while taking care of myself mentally and physically, it gets to be very overwhelming. Once I get into a routine, something comes up and I am back to ground 0. Although it gets difficult at times, I am not complaining about my workload. I am good at working under pressure and somewhat enjoy it. I like to get to the end of a week, look back on all of the things I have done, and be proud of the amount of time and effort I put in. This is part of the reason I would love to join the Louis Stokes North Star STEM Alliance. Other than being a great opportunity to strengthen my collaboration skills, bring my passion for statistics to the team, and gain experience in the STEM field, I am very excited to add this to my plate and see where it takes me, and where I can take it. I believe North Star STEM Alliance will contribute to my achievement with their study groups and tutoring. Although I am self-sufficient and will find the answer to my assignments with or without help, it would be great to collaborate more, especially with people who 1) look like me and 2) are in the same field of study. I also am excited about exploring career directions through facility mentorship and research opportunities. I know actuary is what I want to do, but there are so many great careers statistics can help with, and I would love to explore every option. The way North Star STEM Alliance builds community through social networking, peer mentorship, and student organizations intrigues me since I am all for community. It is so great that this opportunity to work together to accomplish our goals is here for us students and I know I can bring my skills to the alliance. Your mission of establishing programs to help students successfully bridge college and university-level experience to careers and real-world work is incredible and will help me go further in my professional pursuits.
Upon walking into my lecture halls on the first day of classes and discovering I am, yet again, the only black woman in the entire room of 80+ students, my heart breaks a little. I am all for encouraging the youth of today to pursue STEM degrees, as it is not only beneficial to their future but also to the future of society. We need more black female engineers, mathematicians, and scientists. That is why I spend the majority of my summers volunteering at the Youth Mentoring Leadership Program (YMLP). The Igbo Women League is a foundation that strives to teach the Nigerian youth of Minnesota our Igbo culture, along with career exploration, how to stay on the right track, and many more skills kids need to know to grow successfully. Through classes, field trips, cooking, and music lessons, the students in YMLP learn everything they need to know about navigating their way through life. When volunteering, I teach the kids about STEM disciplines and what they entail. I get them excited about becoming future Statisticians, Computer Scientists, and many more STEM careers. Through my duties of financial supervising, class planning, cooking, and public speaking, I won the Leadership Award at the Igbo Women's League: Mothers Day Gala and spoke in front of our contributors and sponsors. Balancing personal well-being with caregiving responsibilities has posed unique challenges, especially considering my family is out-of-state, so making time to visit is challenging. It all requires a delicate equilibrium between self-care and support for loved ones. From managing chronic conditions to unexpected medical emergencies, prioritizing treatment for myself while attending to the health needs of family members has demanded careful consideration and flexibility. This dual role has often necessitated creative solutions, such as coordinating appointments, seeking medical advice, and providing emotional support, ensuring my health and well-being are not compromised. Despite the complexities, confronting these health challenges has reinforced the importance of resilience, empathy, and unwavering commitment to the well-being of both myself and my family members. Despite my challenges, I have found a balance in which I have performed well at school. Immersing myself in hands-on research under esteemed mentors is not just an academic endeavor; it's a transformative experience that resonates deeply with my aspirations and values. Through this opportunity, I envision delving into the intricate complexities of environmental issues, particularly the scourge of plastic pollution, with an unparalleled fervor. Collaborating with experienced researchers and engaging in the research process is not merely a scholarly pursuit; it's an opportunity to forge meaningful connections, gain profound insights, and contribute authentically to a cause I hold dear. This research opportunity isn't just about expanding my knowledge; it's about fueling my passion, empowering me to make a tangible difference, and leaving a lasting impact on the world. Having the funds to pursue this during the summer will be life-changing. The thought of being able to dedicate all my time to research instead of needing to balance it with my coursework and family obligations present during the semester would be such a relief and pleasure. As a passionate advocate for diversity and inclusion in STEM disciplines, I am deeply committed to fostering environments that embrace and empower multicultural and LGBTQ+ students. Through mentorship programs, collaboration with LGBTQ+ and multicultural student organizations, and advocacy for inclusive curriculum reforms, I strive to create spaces where all students, regardless of their background or identity, feel valued and supported. By actively engaging with LGBTQ+ communities and promoting visibility and representation in STEM fields, I aim to inspire and empower LGBTQ+ students to pursue their passions and contribute their unique perspectives to the forefront of scientific innovation. Together, by challenging systemic barriers and biases and advocating for equitable opportunities, resources, and support systems, we can create a more inclusive and diverse STEM community where every individual can thrive and make meaningful contributions to our shared future. As a transfer student it has been hard to not feel as if I am behind or have made the wrong career decisions. Additionally, I have had semesters (such as my current semester) where I am taking not only a rigorous but heavy course load. This sometimes leaves me feeling exhausted and overwhelmed as a full-time college student balancing a part-time job. I often find myself worrying, as college and its associated costs add up rather quickly, and sometimes I do not have the resources to meet my financial demands. My mental and financial worries have proven to be the most significant challenges to my goal of earning a bachelor's degree. The North Star STEM Alliance can best address my needs by offering comprehensive STEM education and support programs that cater to my varying skills and interests. Services such as mentorship programs, professional development, access to resources, and networking opportunities would greatly support my challenges in pursuing STEM education and career advancement. I currently work toward increasing the engagement of multicultural students in STEM disciplines through my involvement in The National Society of Black Engineers, National Association of Black Accountants, and Nigerian Student Association at my university. There I make sure to foster meaningful connections, both personal and professional, that will leave myself and others feeling a sense of community and belonging. I offer both academic and emotional support to a few lower class men who are also in my major. In doing so I make an effort to promote diversity and inclusion for multiracial students in STEM disciplines. AO Ajibola Omoyeni 03/07/2024 Ajibola Omoyeni 03/07/2024

I have always been a highly driven scholar and would seize any opportunity out there, however transitioning from a small diverse high school to a large, PWI university makes it tough to seize additional help and opportunities. It's challenging to fit in because most of the time I am alone, usually I work better with one or two other people helping me study effectively. However, because I am alone most of the time, it is tough to find those taking similar courses to study. Finding resources and additional opportunities also became hard due to the university's size. It is difficult to make meaningful connections with professors when there are three hundred other students in the class, seizing opportunities such as asking professors for research or letters of recommendation becomes a challenge. Seeking additional support regarding academics is also challenging as that professor won't have the time to understand my learning style due to having three hundred other students. Lastly, as a first-generation student, navigating college alone most time is very challenging as everything is new. I have grown a lot and learned a lot compared to my freshmen year, however, these have been the challenging aspects of undergraduate education. I believe the North Star STEM alliance can address my needs by introducing me to another highly motivated undergrad in similar majors as well as hometowns. The social networking service provided by this program will address my need to build connections with others whom I could potentially have as my support system and vice versa. This programs also provide research opportunities which will be great for me as it will help with my future career goals. The Symposium opportunity will also allow me the opportunity to network with others who are doing similar research and present me with an opportunity to put that opportunity on my resume that I would not otherwise have as a first-generation student. I am currently working to increase the engagement of multicultural students in STEM through mentoring other pre-med students as a scholar in the BA/MD program. I also founded the KNyaw student club to provide space and mentoring if needed for other Karen/Knyaw students on campus. As a mentor, I advice and assist my mentees with any information or additional help they need to the best of my ability. Additionally, I focus on multicultural student appreciation through the club events and outreach. L.L Lay Lay Lay Lay

Constantly having to combat stereotypes and biases regarding intelligence and capability can be emotionally draining. Microaggressions and discrimination further compound these challenges, making it difficult to feel a sense of belonging. Additionally, the lack of representation in the curriculum and leadership positions exacerbates feelings of isolation. Imposter syndrome often creeps in, despite evidence of competence. Overcoming these obstacles requires a multifaceted approach, including advocating for diversity and inclusion, seeking supportive communities (like LSAMP) and mentors, and practicing self-care strategies.

The North Star STEM Alliance provides valuable resources that can greatly support my needs as a Black Muslim woman navigating undergraduate education. The Conference, Meeting, and Symposium Opportunities offer crucial platforms for me to enter spaces where I might otherwise feel unwelcome. These events provide opportunities to connect with like-minded peers who share similar identities, fostering a sense of belonging and support.

Moreover, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities offered by the alliance would be instrumental in addressing my challenge of finding research that resonates with me. By providing access to a variety of research resources and opportunities, they offer a pathway for me to engage in meaningful academic pursuits that align with my interests and goals.

In essence, North Star STEM Alliance's programs and services provide vital support in overcoming the challenges I face as a minority student in STEM fields. They offer avenues for professional development, networking, and academic growth, ultimately empowering me to thrive in my undergraduate education and beyond.
I'm actively engaged in initiatives to increase the representation and engagement of multicultural students in these fields. In addition to participating in diversity-focused organizations and advocating for inclusive policies, I founded a pre-health student group specifically for students of color at the University of Minnesota. This initiative provides a supportive community where students can share experiences, access resources, and receive mentorship tailored to their unique needs. Through events, workshops, and networking opportunities, we empower multicultural students to pursue their academic and professional goals in healthcare. By leading by example, mentoring others, and leveraging my research endeavors to address issues of equity, I'm committed to creating a more inclusive and equitable environment in STEM.

I am the first in my family to go to college, so getting integrated has been challenging. I had limited preparation heading in. Also, I had to change the way I treated school. Everything that worked before hasn't worked at the higher level, so I have been retooling my ways to be the best version of myself. Help me get more involved in campus activities. As well as get involved in undergraduate research. I want to build more relationships with people on this campus. Especially with those in the STEM fields, as that is what I am studying. By providing my unique perspectives to the STEM disciplines. I know that I am a minority in most of these fields, so I want to bring my perspective while learning from other perspectives. Engagement in discussions with those who might not have heard voices like mine can improve the field. With so many things vying for my attention, it's easy to get distracted and lose sight of my academic goals. Balancing coursework, social activities, and personal commitments requires a lot of effort and discipline.

Financial roadblocks have also been tough to handle. The cost of tuition and living expenses can feel overwhelming at times, making it hard to fully focus on my studies without worrying about finances.

Despite these challenges, I'm determined to overcome them. I'm trying to improve my time management skills and seek out support when I need it. Exploring financial aid options and part-time work opportunities has also been helpful in easing some of the financial burden. It's all about finding a balance and staying resilient in the face of obstacles on the journey toward earning my bachelor's degree.
The North Star STEM Alliance can really support me by offering programs and services that directly tackle the challenges I face as an underrepresented minority student in STEM. Here's how they can help:

1. **Mentorship and Research Opportunities:** Having someone to guide me through my academic journey and providing chances to dive into research projects would truly enrich my understanding of STEM fields and make my college experience more meaningful.

2. **Career Exploration and Development:** I'd love resources and advice to help me explore different career paths within STEM. Whether it's internships, networking events, or workshops to sharpen my professional skills, having these opportunities would be invaluable.

3. **Community Building and Peer Support:** Being able to connect with other minority students in STEM through social events, mentorship programs, and student organizations would make me feel more supported and understood on campus.

By offering these kinds of programs and services, the North Star STEM Alliance can create an environment where I feel empowered and encouraged to excel in my studies and pursue my goals in STEM.
I'm dedicated to making sure multicultural students feel welcomed and empowered in STEM. That means giving them opportunities to lead, connecting them with mentors who understand their journey, and advocating for resources like scholarships and support services that address their unique needs.
